Interesting Facts

Something most people may not know about Dr. Andersen is that she is a sailor and loves being on the sea; which in a way served as an inspiration for her most recent book In the Land of Sea and Women. This particular passion of Dr. Andersen’s stems mostly from her husband; He is also a sailor, which is how she got into the sport; a fact which she says was facilitated by their residence on the Chesapeake Bay.
Dr. Andersen also added that her husband’s family is very well known for their maritime photography (the Rosenfeld Collection, which you can learn more about by checking out http://www.rosenfeldcollection.org/) This is also how she became interested in writing the book On the Land and on Sea, which she views as a “social history of women’s lives, as connected to sailing, based on the images in the Rosenfeld Collection).
On the Land and On Sea features the lives of women in sailing, and also as workers and sportswomen, over the twentieth century. It utilizes photographs from the Rosenfeld Collection at Mystic Seaport, as captured by the Rosenfelds’ photographic eye and shows an aspect of the collection that can be founded for more historical research. Drawing on her experience as a sailor herself and the intimate connection with the Rosenfeld family, Dr. Andersen includes essays to accompany the photographs, showing the social and historical context which frame the images.
